Dear Parent(s)/Guardians,
Archery season will begin around October 15th. Its available to 4th and 5th grade students. The school has bows, arrows and targets. No fees are required to practice and see if archery is something they want to do competitively. I will go to each class and pass out permission slips for anyone interested in shooting.
Tournaments – Please arrive at tournaments 30 minutes before our scheduled shooting time. Please refrain from coaching from the stands. They will not always shoot well. Each tournament allows 24 archers to be on a team. The top 12 scores count as our team score. A team is comprised of a minimum of both boys, and girls, minimum of four of each gender. The remaining archers will be on a 2nd team. Regionals, State and National tournaments only allow us to take 24 archers. . Last year we went to 13 tournaments. Five at area schools, plus a regional, state and national tournament. Nationals are held in Louisville.
When I sign us up for the tournaments, they require a guarantee, and we are charged whether we come or not. Therefore the tournament fees are non-refundable.
Note** With the donations from our school, areas businesses, and parents, we were able to pay the entry fee for three tournaments last year, two buses to take us and we bought 5 new targets. We will fund raise and look for donations again this year to keep costs down.
Equipment – The school has 16 bows and plenty of targets to use for practice and tournaments. If this your son or daughter’s first year in archery, I would not purchase a bow until you and your child are both convinced they will stick with it. If you decide to buy a bow, places to go are Dick’s Sporting Goods, Academy Sports, or Online at EBay or Amazon. $175-$200 is the average price for a bow kit. This would include a case, arrows, and arm gaurds. Used bows can be found on EBay and Craigslist. Also a good place to sell if they don’t stick with it. The bow you buy can be used all the way through High School. Broke Arrow Archery (New Haven, KY) has come to most tournaments with equipment to buy. Their prices are pretty good, and they have a great selection. Good people too. We bought targets from them last year.
The only thing I would strongly encourage you to buy is an arm band. Not expensive, and any that are made for archery work fine.
Practices: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are tentative practice nights. I need to see how many we have sign up. We may split up our group to accommodate everyone. I want each archer to have a chance to shoot a minimum of 2 times a week. Attendance is required for the majority of practices (75%)
Archery Club and Team – I want everyone to get a chance to learn and enjoy archery. That being said, we have a competitive archery team and to shoot well, good attendance is a must. I am asking that archers attend 75% of the practices. I know many events will cause students to miss practice, and that’s ok, but understand, to shoot well, it takes a lot of time. If we want to have a team and not just a club, we have to put in the time.
Pick up time is still 5:15. Parents are responsible for transportation after practice. We will dismiss promptly outside in front of the cafeteria. Last year, parents were great about being on time. Thank You!!
Safety – I attended the training to become a certified archery instructor. I run the practices according to the NASP guidelines. Safety is the number one objective. Students will show mastery of the safety rules and procedures prior to using any archery equipment. Students will be taught proper form, safety rules and general knowledge of the equipment. Students will be expected to adhere to all safety rules and follow guidelines on care of the equipment.
Safety is number one. I can't have anyone who is unsafe participating. Anyone ignoring or not following expectations may be sidelined immediately.
